Working in Portugal: a guide for English speakers

Portugal has a large English-speaking tech and business community. Here is how the market works — and how to find a job directly, without agencies.

Where the jobs are

The largest concentration of roles is in Lisbon, followed by Porto and Braga. Sectors that often hire in English include technology and data, engineering, shared-service centres, and healthcare. Many roles are hybrid, and a significant share is fully remote.

You can see live counts by area and city on our labour-market page (in Portuguese), or go straight to the job listings.

Does the job require Portuguese?

For international companies and tech roles, English is frequently enough — the job ad is often written in English. For customer-facing or public-sector roles, working Portuguese is usually required. Check each listing: the language of the ad is a good signal.

Apply directly to the company

Joblink only lists vacancies published by the companies themselves on their own career pages. That means every listing links to the original application — no agencies, no ghost ads. It also means an English CV is usually fine: you are applying to the employer, not to a recruiter.

Tip: even in English-language roles, a short Portuguese summary can help. But the application itself is assessed on your skills, so write clearly and keep it honest.

Remote and hybrid work

Remote work is common in technology, marketing and support roles. Some companies hire from anywhere in Portugal; others require a few office days per week. Read the listing carefully and ask about the expected time zone and office days before you commit.

Relocation and paperwork

Visa and residency rules depend on your nationality and situation, and they change. For anything official, always check the Portuguese authorities directly (for example AIMA, the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum) or your country's consulate. We keep job information up to date, but we do not give immigration advice.
